Mission Statement
 

The Institute of Buddhist Studies exists to provide quality training to help prepare current and potential missionaries to understand the Buddhist world, share the Gospel of Christ in a relevant way with Buddhists and to develop communities of believers that can multiply in their local context.

 

Core Modules

Introduction to Buddhism:  This module is an introduction to Buddhism in general and a history of the Christian mission to Buddhists.

Contextualizing the Gospel for Buddhist Peoples:  This module examines at principles for developing a culturally relevant presentation of the Gospel to Buddhists.

Church Planting in Buddhist Contexts:  This module examines various church planting models and church structures, looks at what kinds of models are working, and helps prepare the student to prepare for discipleship and church planting in Buddhist contexts.

Elective Modules

Future modules will include Tibetans, Theravadans, Japanese, Chinese, folk Buddhists, and new Asian religions.


Faculty
 

Alex Smith, (D.Miss., Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, CA), regional director for OMF, veteran   missionary to Thailand, author and lecturer on ministry to Buddhists.

 

Alan R. Johnson, (Ph.D. cand., OCMS, U.K.), veteran missionary to Thailand, program director for the Institute of Buddhist Studies.

 

L. David Oleson (M. Div., Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, CA), served as missionary to the Philippines and Tibet.

 

Terry Muck, (Ph. D. Northwestern University, Professor of Missions and World Religions at Asbury Theological Seminary).

 

Jean Johson, (BA Cross-Cultural Communications) served in church planting among Cambodians in both home missions and in Cambodia for 18 years.

 

Dianne Campbell, (BS from Evangel University, Graduate of Mayo School of Physical Therapy, Rochester, MN) Serves in Cambodia, Church planting team training coach and leadership mentorship.

 

 

Nature of Institute

 

The Institute is a comprehensive eight-week program that seeks to prepare individuals for ministry to Buddhists in their own countries or as cross-cultural missionaries.  Courses are taught by outstanding Buddhist scholars and missionaries with extensive experience in ministry to Buddhists in various parts of the world.  The Institute offers a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding and love for the Buddhist peoples and develop the skills for effective ministry to Buddhists

DATES OF STUDY: April 4 - May 27 2005

  • April 4 - 15  Terry Muck   Introduction to Buddhism and the History of Christian Mission to Buddhist.

  • April 18 - 29 Alex Smith  Contextualization

  • May 2 - 13 Jean Johnson and team from Cambodia  Church Planting in Buddhist Contexts.

  • May 16 - 27 Dave Oleson  Ministry to Tibetan Buddhists.


Admission Requirements

Applicants are expected to have the following qualifications:

¨       A burden for ministry to Buddhist people.

¨       A desire to learn how to be effective in ministry to Buddhists.

¨       A commitment to become involved in ministry to Buddhists following the institute.

¨       A good grasp of spoken and written English.

¨       Recommendations from pastors, district or general council officials and/or missionaries.

 

 

Registration

 

Ø       Complete the Pre-Application Form.

Ø       A packet of information will be sent to you requesting additional information and references.

Ø       Once the full application and references are received at APTS, the student will be notified of the admission decision.

Ø       Should APTS confirm that you have been accepted, a US$50 deposit is required before March 1st to secure your reservation.  After March 1st, a deposit of $100 is required.  If registration is canceled after March 18th, the registration fee is non-refundable but may be transferred to another approved student.

Ø       Final payment of course fees is due at the time of on-site registration on the first day of class.

 

 

Academic Credit


An option is available to enroll for three, six or nine units of graduate credit at APTS.  Applicants for graduate credit must possess a bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution, complete required academic assignments, and pay applicable fees.

 For those seeking undergraduate credit, a transcript will be provided to present to your own institution for evaluation.

 

Goals
 

§         Promote vision for ministry to Buddhists.

§         Encourage participation in ministry to Buddhists.

§         Provide guidance to those called to ministry to Buddhists in fulfilling their calling with confidence and effectiveness.

§         Encourage the development of an understanding of Buddhists, their faith, and cultures.

§         Develop essential skills and disciplines in ministering effectively to Buddhists.

§          Intensify prayer and intercession on behalf of Buddhists.

 

 Venue and Lodging
 

The Institute will be held in the newly constructed Asia Pacific Center for the Advancement of Leadership and Missions (APCALM) building.  Sessions and housing are accommodated in this beautiful seven-story building located on the campus of APTS.  APTS is located near the city of Baguio, Philippines, situated at 5,000 feet (1,500 meters) in the Cordillera mountain range of Northern Luzon.  Temperatures are moderate all year round.  The beautiful views of the surrounding mountains provide a conducive environment for academic study and spiritual encounter.

 

Student Costs

Total costs for those attending the entire 8-week Institute:

There are four (4) two week modules:
Housing - Option #1 - Shared Dorm Room: 36.00 for each two week course.
               Option #2 - Apartment: 160.00 for each two week course.
Food - Weekly meal ticket - 25.00 (this includes 3 meals per day/2 on Sunday)
APTS Fee - 38.00 for two courses or a maximum of 46.00 for more than two courses  
(this includes library, computer and administrative fees)
Registration fee - 85.00 per course (this includes your books, CD's and all resources materials) International student visa's - less than 21 days is no cost; 21-28 days is 40.00; 59 or more days is 60.00.
International student visa's - less than 21 days is no cost; 21- 58 days is 40.00; 59 or more days is 60.00
Transportation fess - to and from APTS/APCALM campus are not included. More information can be received by writing the email contact address.

Optional costs for academic credit:

Scholarship: A limited number of partial scholarship are available for IBS participants needing assistance to attend.
